When the lights went on again in 1945, two areas of humanity remained plunged in darkness : the Jews who survived the Concentration Camps and the SS men who had run them.
For the Jews of central Europe, their world, their race, their families annihilated, the only hope of sanctuary lay in the National Home : but the British, to whom Palestine was mandated, moved like a flaming sword this way and that to prevent their arrival. For the defeated Nazis, South America seemed to offer the best security against trial, extradition or assassination.
